CASTELEYN, Abraham

CASTELEYN, Abraham
(c. 1628–1681)
Journalist and city printer. During the 1650s, Casteleyn started two newspapers in his city of Haarlem, of which his Oprechte Haerlemsche Courant (Sincere Haarlem Newspaper) became known all over Europe. His widow and offspring continued the company until 1737, when it was sold to Izaak (1681–1761) and Johannes (1708–1780) Enschede. Their company printed newspapers until the mid-20th century and is also known, since 1814, as a printer of banknotes, such as the present euro, and of valuable documents. See alsoCURRENCY; PRESS.
